Rocking hard through the dark times
I’m back, trying to make class out of crass and maybe succeeding.
What’s been happenin?
Wellllll surprise, miserable people are still trying to ban books.1
There is pushback now and forever though - because we’re not gonna take it - and teens and librarians definitely aren’t taking it.2
Finally, how to one-sentence the utter ridiculousness of book banning - via this headline:
Book banning goes full ourobouros as a Texas school district removes the Bible from its shelves.
Full ourobouros! 🤣
And…a ray of light - Student Loan Forgiveness is officially a reality - mostly. Because of course people still have to send in an application. Always with the paperwork. I’ve been reading about and contemplating what debt actually means. This video was cracking good - Your debt is someone else’s asset, man!
Don’t forget to get your regular dose of even more news about how abortion bans are continuing to devastate and how you can fight back. I still find Andrea Grimes’ Substack to be the best one-stop pro-abortion resource.3 I also really dig Arizona Agenda for (my) local news in general - they posted about Desert Star Family Planning in Phoenix, an independent abortion clinic owned and operated by the formidable and compassionate Dr. DeShawn Taylor.4 I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Taylor share information in a couple webinars and have so much respect for her.5
And, as always, in a recent interview with The Guardian, Dorothy Roberts is on point:
It’s clear that the movement for reproductive justice must be aligned with movements for housing, abolishing the prison industrial complex, environmental justice, and economic justice, because all of those movements are essential to supporting freedom, including reproductive freedom.6
I am reading and learning from not one but two books by Dorothy Roberts (Torn Apart and Killing the Black Body). Might I suggest that you sign up to attend a virtual event about abolishing family policing so that you can learn more too? The Barnard Center for Research on Women is hosting an online discussion November 10th, with several powerhouse speakers from organizations that Roberts mentions in her work - you can find out more and sign up HERE for free.
Throughout the history of the internets, I have never really been into animal memes or cutesy videos, but suddenly I am a huge capybara fan. Some days a video of a giant peaceful rodent is the only goodness. So here’s one for you!
And also here’s some Icelandic stoner rock.
